The problem with the greeting “Merry Christmas” is that it assumes the person you’re saying it to is a Christian. Many Americans are not Christians and just happen to have holy days in December, too. By saying “Happy holy days,” you’re not being politically correct. You’re being mannerly.

Not that manners are big in America today.
